Method
China now has 400+ humanoid models from 140+ manufacturers, with 2026 production forecast to top 100,000 units, so picking ten meant leaving most of the field out. The criterion was industrial design quality, not specs: how the head and face are handled, what the surface is made of and how it's finished, how joints are hidden or shown, and what impression the whole silhouette leaves. Payload figures and benchmark videos are noted where relevant but were not the selection criteria.
XPENG's IRON opens the report and gets a full teardown rather than a short profile, because it is the one robot in this set whose entire public story is an industrial-design story: proportion, skin, gender, material, and customization, not spec-sheet bragging. Its factory line went live on 7 to 8 September 2026 in Guangzhou and it stood on the show floor at IFA Berlin, 4 to 8 September 2026, making it the newest major production milestone in the group as well.

XPENG IRON · Identity & positioning
IRON is XPENG Robotics' third humanoid design (its Gen-8 robot overall, following wheeled predecessors), unveiled November 2025 and moved into automotive-grade mass production in September 2026. XPENG is pitching it as a retail, hospitality and companionship product rather than an industrial tool: first deployed in XPENG's own car showrooms, offices and campuses in 2026, with commercial launch in China and overseas targeted for 2027. Price is unconfirmed by XPENG; third-party dealer listings floated ~$120,000 USD as of Sept 2026.

XPENG IRON · Design philosophy
XPENG's stated design brief is extreme anthropomorphism: reproducing human proportion, gait and surface at 1:1 scale, instead of a stylized robot look or a visor-and-chassis sci-fi aesthetic. The company calls its internal approach a "general-purpose humanoid design framework" that treats human anatomy itself as the reference masterpiece to be replicated, down to a biomimetic spine and ligament-like joints rather than simple rotational servos.
This is a deliberate contrast with the dominant humanoid aesthetic out of the US (Tesla Optimus, Boston Dynamics Atlas/Figure): broad-shouldered, matte-armored, visibly mechanical "industrial" bodies designed to read as tools. XPENG's explicit counter-positioning is a robot designed to read as a person: soft-edged, knit-skinned, and, in the company's own word, "huggable."
XPENG IRON · Layered construction
The central industrial-design decision behind IRON is structural, not cosmetic: the body is engineered in three literal layers, each independently designed, mirroring vertebrate anatomy rather than a single rigid shell over motors.
A jointed metal/actuator frame built around a flexible, multi-segment "spine" rather than a rigid torso box, plus a "complex shoulder assembly" that mimics human ligaments and bones instead of simple rotary joints, enabling shrugging, hugging and other non-robotic shoulder motion.
A second layer of lattice-structured material laid over the skeleton, engineered to mimic the bulk and give of human muscle and to passively damp mechanical vibration. XPENG says the lattice's non-linear physical properties broke their simulation tools and required custom "system identification" algorithms to model and control: the material itself, not just the motors, had to be treated as part of the control problem.
A soft, seamed, knit-textured synthetic skin wraps the entire body (XPENG frames this single layer as doing double duty as both "skin" and a safety/impact layer), with touch sensors embedded for whole-body haptic feedback, plus a stated goal of making the robot feel "warmer and more intimate" to touch, not just look right.
XPENG IRON · The head
IRON has no eyes, mouth, nose or brow. The entire head is a single smooth ovoid shell, available in at least two finishes seen publicly: a matte black shell with vertical rib/fin detailing (like a fencing or motorcycle-race helmet), and a glossy iridescent blue-chrome finish used in lifestyle marketing shots. Both read immediately as "helmet," not "face."
This is a legible industrial-design choice, not an oversight: a fully human face on a robot this anatomically convincing would sit deep in uncanny-valley territory and invite exactly the "is it alive" reaction XPENG was trying to manage. A helmet-like head lets the body be maximally human while the head stays unambiguously a product. It's the same trick motorcycle and racing-suit design uses to make a fully suited human read as "vehicle-adjacent" rather than "person in danger."
XPENG IRON · Modularity as the actual product
The most unusual thing about IRON's industrial design isn't any single part. It's that XPENG designed the body itself as a configurator, the way a car has trims and colors. He Xiaopeng was explicit about this analogy on stage.
Design-wise this is XPENG's boldest bet: instead of one universal robot chassis with interchangeable end-effectors (the industrial-robot norm), XPENG designed identity itself, meaning sex-coded proportion, hairstyle, skin tone, silhouette and clothing, as the customer-facing product surface, borrowing the mental model of automotive trim levels wholesale.
XPENG IRON · The controversy, a design-ethics case study
The customization strategy above is also exactly what triggered IRON's viral backlash. XPENG built and marketed an explicit "female" body variant with a slimmer waist, wider hips, and a visibly contoured chest under the skin/clothing, alongside a broader-shouldered "male" variant. Reaction split into two connected but distinct controversies:

22 degrees of freedom per hand, using what XPENG calls the "industry's smallest harmonic joint" to hit roughly 1:1 human hand size and proportion: a specific, hard miniaturization target (most humanoid hands are visibly oversized relative to their body to fit the gearing). Some publicly filmed display units were later found to be running older-generation hand hardware rather than the full 22-DoF hand, so the hand seen in a given photo isn't always the final spec. Worth flagging for anyone using photos as ground truth.
The visible surface pattern is not random. It reads as technical activewear: diagonal compression-garment seam lines across the thighs and torso (visible clearly in the dissection photos, §04), a hexagonal micro-perforation field across the chest and shoulder (visible in §05's close-up), and a small embroidered "X" wordmark badge placed exactly where a sportswear logo would sit on a jacket chest. The design language is deliberately borrowed from performance apparel, not "cyborg armor," reinforcing the "companion," not "combat unit," positioning.
IRON wears a distinct sculpted white sneaker-like foot covering rather than an exposed mechanical foot, again borrowing consumer-product language (a shoe) instead of industrial-robot language (a tread or articulated toe plate).
XPENG IRON · Design-for-manufacture
The September 2026 news event studied here is specifically about production design, not concept design. It's a deliberate extension of XPENG's identity as an EV maker. The Guangzhou humanoid line is described as "automotive-grade," reusing XPENG's car-manufacturing quality systems, with >80% automation of core processes and, per He Xiaopeng, "production lines created from scratch with no precedent to follow." The robotics division separately raised over $900M at a $6.3B valuation, reportedly the largest single-round private raise in China's embodied-AI industry to date, to fund this manufacturing scale-up.
Commercial sequencing disclosed: 2026 for internal rollout only (XPENG stores, offices, campuses); 2027 for external commercial launch, China and overseas.

Case 2 of 10 · Unitree G1
G1 stands only 127 to 132 cm tall and weighs about 35 kg, so next to an adult it reads as child-sized rather than towering, closer to a large toy than a piece of industrial equipment. Unitree leaves the joints uncovered: round metal housings at the shoulders, elbows and knees sit in the open against brushed silver-grey limbs, so the mechanism is part of the look rather than something hidden under a shell. The head has no eyes, mouth or screen at all, just a smooth matte-black ovoid with a single glowing blue ring cut across it like a visor slash, which reads as an abstract expression rather than a blank face. Hands are covered in black fabric gloves, a soft contrast against the metal arms. Internally, cables run through hollow joint shafts instead of along the outside of the limbs, which is a mechanical decision that also keeps the silhouette clean during fast movement. It folds up for transport and sells for roughly $13,500 to $16,000, cheap enough that this is the humanoid robot most people outside the industry have actually seen move in person.

Case 3 of 10 · UBTech Walker S2
Walker S2 is close to adult height at 1.76 m, built to move through doorways, along conveyor lines and past workstations that were sized for people, not scaled down for a robot. The head is a glossy black, helmet-shaped shell with a visor-like panel and a single glowing ring, more sci-fi soldier than friendly droid. The body runs white with black accent panels in a two-tone scheme that reads like a sports uniform, with the UBTECH wordmark molded into the chest the way a logo sits on consumer electronics. Joints at the shoulders, hips and ankles are dark and visibly mechanical against the white shell panels, a deliberate light-shell, dark-joint contrast rather than one uniform finish. It is the first humanoid that can dock and swap its own battery in under three minutes, and its press photography leans hard on fleet shots, hundreds of identical white-and-black units in formation, which has become as much a part of its visual identity as the robot's own shape.

Case 4 of 10 · Fourier GR-3
GR-3 breaks from Fourier's earlier GR-1 and GR-2 look, which was metallic and exoskeleton-like, inherited from the company's roots in medical rehabilitation hardware. This generation is rounded and soft, wrapped in what Fourier describes as automotive-grade upholstery over foam padding, in a warm beige tone the company calls a "Morandi" color. Joints are padded and covered rather than shown; the studio shot shows only faint seams at the elbows and knees, no exposed motors anywhere. Thirty-one pressure sensors across the body drive blinking, eye tracking and small reactive movements meant to read as emotion, and those sensors are the actual link back to Fourier's rehab heritage: force and pressure sensing is still the core interaction language, just wrapped in something soft instead of exposed medical-exoskeleton hardware. Case 5 of 10 · AgiBot Yuanzheng A2
A2 is AgiBot's flagship general-purpose humanoid, built by Zhiyuan Robotics under Peng Zhihui, the former Huawei "genius youth" engineer. In November 2025 it set a Guinness record by walking 106.286 km without stopping. The body is a hard, glossy silver-white and black shell rather than fabric, giving it a sleeker, more product-like read than Fourier's soft companion design. The head is a smooth glossy black egg, closer to a motorcycle visor than a face, with thin vertical blue LED strips standing in for eyes and no other facial features. The torso is silver-white with a contoured black waistband and the AGIBOT wordmark molded straight into the chest panel. Case 6 of 10 · Galbot G1
Galbot G1 is a wheeled robot, not a walking one: a human-scale torso and two 7-degree-of-freedom arms sit on a rounded, wheeled base instead of legs, which gives it a top-heavy, bust-on-a-pedestal silhouette built for retail and pharmacy floors rather than open terrain. The head is its most distinctive feature, a smooth mirror-chrome dome with no eyes, mouth or any visible feature at all, a blank sensor pod that houses the cameras and reads as sleek and anonymous rather than characterful. The torso is matte white plastic with a black rectangular touchscreen showing status text, above a black cinched waist section. Forearms and shoulder pivots alternate white shell segments with brushed silver actuator housings, so the engineering is visible but organized into neat bands rather than left raw. The hands are simple black two-finger grippers built for picking up bottles and boxes, not for looking human. It has been shown working real pharmacy shifts in Europe and was demonstrated live at IFA Berlin in September 2026, with pricing reported anywhere from about $55,000 to $120,000 depending on configuration and market.

Case 7 of 10 · Astribot S1
Astribot S1 is a stationary robot: a white teardrop-shaped torso fixed on a black cylindrical column, with two arms and no legs at all. It has no face in any conventional sense. What sits above the shoulders is a separate rectangular black sensor pod on thin white support struts, deliberately styled to look like a mounted camera rather than a head. The arms are glossy white with grey rubber cable-management sleeves wrapped around the forearms, ending in matte black two-finger hands with visible screws and wiring, an industrial contrast against the smooth white limbs. What actually carries the robot's design identity in the press isn't the shell, it's the motion: S1's arms move at up to 10 meters per second with fluid, minimal-jerk trajectories that reviewers consistently describe as fast and smooth rather than jerky or robotic, demonstrated pouring wine, ironing shirts, writing calligraphy and even performing Wing Chun forms. For this one robot, movement quality is doing the job that surface design does for the others on this list.

Case 8 of 10 · EngineAI PM01
PM01 is small, at 1.38 m and 40 kg, but it is not styled as cute the way its "compact consumer robot" positioning might suggest. The shell is a dark gunmetal and silver aluminum alloy exoskeleton over black joint sections, closer to a sci-fi trooper than a friendly appliance. The head is a smooth, angular, fully enclosed helmet with a narrow blue-lit visor strip and a small sensor cluster, no expressive face of any kind. The chest carries a glossy red circular sensor that looks like a single eye, next to an orange hexagonal accent panel and a small integrated screen for status and control. Joints at the shoulders, hips and knees are exposed as rounded silver-and-black actuator pods, giving the whole thing a segmented, mecha-like read, reinforced by a waist that can rotate 320 degrees. It sells for about ¥88,000 (roughly $12,000), aimed at commercial and education buyers rather than consumers.

Case 9 of 10 · Xiaomi CyberOne
CyberOne debuted in 2022, years before most of the other robots in this set, and it still reads as the most disciplined piece of product design here. The body is matte white engineering plastic over an aerospace-aluminum frame, with black joints for contrast and no visible screws or seams anywhere. The head is a smooth, glossy dark-grey helmet shape with no eyes, mouth or screen, closer to a stylized astronaut helmet than a robot skull; some later concept material describes a curved OLED face for future versions, but the unit that was actually shown and photographed has a blank head, and shows emotion through voice and vision AI rather than a literal expression. The torso is a single molded white shell with the CyberOne wordmark on it, echoing the design language of a Xiaomi phone or vacuum cleaner rather than a piece of lab equipment. Xiaomi's own design team has described the result as "unmistakably Xiaomi," clean, minimalist and futuristic without reaching for menace or spectacle, and the famous launch photo of it holding a single flower is doing a lot of work to reinforce that a faceless robot can still read as gentle.

Case 10 of 10 · Tiangong Ultra
Tiangong Ultra, from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, became the first humanoid robot to win a half marathon, finishing in 2 hours 40 minutes in April 2025 at a top speed of 12 km/h. Its design is athletic rather than decorative: a matte dark grey and black torso and limbs, with the leg mechanism deliberately left visible, a rigid-flexible coupled structure with an exposed rod-and-hinge knee joint that echoes animal or exoskeleton biomechanics more than a smooth human leg. The head is a glossy black, fully enclosed ovoid helmet with no facial features at all, built purely for function and airflow. The official product render shows a slightly more refined version of the same shell, in a grey and black finish with a diamond-shaped chest emblem and green accent detailing on the forearms, giving it a more finished, premium-soldier look than the race-worn unit. In competition it wears a bright orange sleeveless vest printed with the character 天工 over the black body, for visibility among the human runners around it. Almost none of the coverage of this robot discusses styling intent; the design story here is entirely about what the exposed mechanism had to survive.

One pattern holds across all ten: not one of them gives its robot a human-style face with eyes, a mouth and a nose. The choice is always some version of a blank, helmet-like head, whether that head is IRON's ribbed shell, G1's glowing slash, or Galbot's mirror dome. The differences show up instead in what happens below the neck: how much of the mechanism is hidden, and what the surface is made of.
The verdict
"Elegant" isn't one quality. Across this set it splits into at least three different, sometimes opposed ideas: restraint, material ambition, and warmth. Ranked on any single axis, the order changes.
For restraint and coherence, Unitree G1 is the strongest design in the group. Nothing on it is decorative. The exposed joints are not apologized for, the face is one line of light instead of a pair of eyes, and the whole object looks like exactly what it is. Xiaomi CyberOne is close behind on the same axis, older but just as disciplined, and arguably the cleanest pure product design of the ten.
For material ambition, XPENG IRON is well ahead of the field. No other robot here attempts a full synthetic skin over a muscle-like structure, and none generated anywhere near the same public argument about what that choice means. It is also the riskiest: the same anatomical realism that makes it the most technically impressive is what produced the gender controversy covered in case 1.
For warmth, Fourier GR-3 is the one built to be touched rather than looked at, soft-shelled, padded, in a color chosen to feel approachable rather than futuristic. It is the least "impressive" of the ten by spec sheet and the most successful at what it is actually trying to do.
If forced to pick one winner: Unitree G1, on the strength of doing the most with the least. It never tries to be a person, it just makes an honestly mechanical object look considered, and it does that at a price and a scale (it is the best-selling humanoid robot in the world) that the other nine haven't matched. IRON is the more ambitious design and the more interesting case study, but ambition and elegance are not the same thing, and IRON's execution is still carrying an unresolved problem that G1 never created for itself.
